Prof. Karl Lhotta graduated as Doctor of  All Medicine sub auspiciis praesidentis in 1984. In 1992, Prof. Lhotta completed his education as Specialist for Internal Medicine at the Medical University of Innsbruck and two years later his subspecialisation in Nephrology. Due to his extensive scientific publishing accomplishments, the Medical University of Innsbruck awarded him teaching credentials as university lecturer in internal medicine. In 2006, he earned the additional title of trained hypertensiologist of the German Hypertension League, “Hypertensiologe DHL®”.  In 2008, Prof. Lhotta became Head of the Department for Nephrology and Dialysis at the Academic Teaching Hospital Feldkirch and Leader of the VIVIT Nephrology Division. His research group includes Prov.-Doz. Dr. Emanuel Zitt and Dr. Hanelore Sprenger-Mähr and represents an integral pillar of the medical research in the field of nephrology at the VIVIT. Since October 2015, Prof. Lhotta serves as president of the Austrian Society of Nephrology (ÖGN) and since 2016 he became honorary professor at the Medical University of Innsbruck.
